# MetaTrader 5 for Python: which platforms does it run on?

Risk warning: CFDs and spread bets are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. You can lose money on these products, and each provider publishes its own loss figure under FCA rules. You should consider whether you understand how they work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money. Automated and API trading can amplify losses through bugs, connectivity failures and runaway orders.

The commonest question about the MetaTrader 5 Python package is which operating systems it runs on. The vendor’s own page does not answer it.

## What the vendor page does say

- It tells the reader to install Python 3.8 from the Windows downloads page.
- It states no limitations.

## What it does not answer

The same site ships macOS and Linux builds of MetaTrader 5. The Python page neither says the package needs Windows nor says it runs anywhere else. Pointing at the Windows downloads page while stating no limitations is not an answer to the question, and it is the question most people arrive with.

We have not run the package on macOS or Linux and we have no vendor statement either way, so this page does not tell you whether it works. It tells you that the vendor page does not tell you, which is a fact about the documentation and is checkable at the address above.

## What to do

- If the platform matters to your build, ask MetaQuotes in writing and keep the answer with its date.
- If you have run it on macOS or Linux, send us what you saw with the build number and the date, and we will publish it as a reader report rather than as a tested result.
- Until either arrives, plan for Windows, because that is the only platform the vendor page points at.
